For my time being in Moscow, I have seen those famous deep, rich and vibrant coloured russian scarves on majority of the women. Since I was born in past Soviet Union country, I always admired those colourful scarves that just remind me of a “babushka”, in translation “grandma”, from a rural countryside Nowadays, it is used not only for staying warm , but it is also a perfect touch to brighten up an outfit. Back in the days, the scarves were a necessity for villagers and city dwellers of the Russian Empire. Scarves were used to dress up an outfit, and even to show one’s marital and social status. The various embroiders of the scarves indicated the owner’s background and place of origin since initially those scarves were produced at home and varied from village to village. They were passed on from generation to generation as a family treasure. Today, you can spot them on a woman as a fashion statement for an outfit. They come in three sizes which makes them perfect for multifunctional use varying from head scarf to shawl. I personally prefer the medium size since it is big enough for a shawl and good enough as a head scarf But be aware, choosing a scarf can become challenging because there are all so beautiful. My suggestion, pick your favourite two…or three
